Need help with Barks biography

creator of Duckburg and Scrooge McDuck

Postby Rockerduck » Fri Apr 21, 2006 10:34 pm

Hi all,

As you might know, I've written some biographies of Duck-artists for McDuck.nl. Now I also wrote an article about Carl Barks, and I need to pick out some illustrations that fit the biography. It's kinda hard to choose, though, because Barks made more than 6300 pages of comics! I selecteed a few and I would like to hear your opinions. What do you think are the best to fit in a Barks biography? Or maybe you have other suggestions?

Here are my picks, please cast your votes:

I'll take a guess or two: the first art selection comes from The Sunken City, the second and third come from the ten-pager where the Nephews are trying to raise bees in the backyard, the fourth is from A Cold Bargain, the fifth is from Only a Poor Old Man, the sixth and seventh are from the first Beagle Boys ten-pager (Terror of the Beagle Boys), the eigth is from Back to the Klondike, the ninth is from Gladstone Returns (also known as Swami Swindle), and the tenth is from Lost in the Andes.

Wow! You're GOOD, Doc! :D

Now please cast your voice: which three (maybe 4?; it's a long article) are most suited? Or make your own suggestion.

I would suggest the Plain Awful panel (good example of Barks' art), the four-panel selection from Terror of the Beagle Boys (good example of Barks' verbal humor), and the splash pane from the bees story (good example of Barks' animation-style physical humor). For a fourth, I'd go either with the panels from A Cold Bargain (I've always liked that kitchen sinks exchange) or the Only a Poor Old Man panel (it's a rather pretty piece of artwork, even though the decidely un-photgenic Beagle Boys are in it).

"Oh, yes, you did! You deliberately INSULTED me - loud enough for me to HEAR!"
(which story)

Sorry for quote. I've now put it in the general topic 'Carl Barks'.

About the illustrations:
I think the choices of Rockerduck are too Rosaïstic.
Where's the 1960s? Where's 'The Magic Hourglass'? Where's 'Penny Wise'? Daisy with a wig? Where's the joke of 'How Green Was My Lettuce', with the odd animals on the background. Bragging Scrooge from first pages of 'Looney Lunar Gold Rush'. Some examples from the post-1967 area. All chances too show how rich and flavoured Barks's universe is.

*EDIT* boardlinking updated to McDrake

One of my absolute favorites: the ten-pager in which Huey, Duey and Louie persuade Donald in starting a singing career. However, Donald soon turns to being a musician- a very bad one- who keeps using louder and bigger instruments every time, driving HD&L crazy.

It hasn't got anything to do with Don Rosa. Why DOES he have to be dragged in every time --even when we're not talking about him? Let your obsession rest for a while, will you?

As I explained in the Dutch forum, I tried to pick some scenes that show key examples of Barks' skills in drawing and capturing emotions. The first one, I picked because it shows how good and consequent Barks was in dealing with the Ducks' proportions. Th second, because he doesn't show Donald's head literally changing, but Donald's feeling, a very lifelike experience, etc. etc.

It would be nice to see you choose a scene that would show a different side than just the plain choices of stories up to the early 1950s. Does your biography stop in the early 1950s or does it span Barks entire career?

And what about emotions in 'The Magic Hourglass'? Especially since Gemstone decided to frame it as... campfire-story, your biography could be an oppurtunity to show that Barks stands on his own, showing 'The Magic Hourglass' as a proof of that quality.
