Barks quote quiz

creator of Duckburg and Scrooge McDuck

Postby Egg » Mon May 07, 2007 12:12 pm

"Turn your head a little more to the left, sonny boy!"
(which story?)
hint #1: "How are we going to HIDE around here? The brush is too thin!"

Barks made many stories, but not that many to give away quotes too easily.

So, Egg has an idea: What if people would ásk for hints?
For example, questions like "Does the story contain Scrooge McDuck?" Then Egg could answer "no" or "cold", in this case.

What do you think about that?

The line about the brush being too thin to hide in rings a bell. I definately read that story while growing up. Donald and his nephews need to hide, but see no place to do so. I can picture it. But, somehow, I still can't remember the specific story.

Interesting that you use the word "picture". (hint hint)

That was from the story in Walt Disney's Comics & Stories Nr. 57 from 1945. Donald was trying to photograph a woodpecker in Cool Grove. There wasn't enough brush to hide behind and sneak up on the bird. So hid in a hollow log.

Wow. Quite a quiz, there, Rob.
Gosh, I recognize most names but cannot place them. Is identifying the story (in the less obvious cases) accepted as a half good answer?

Name an ocean channel near Duckburg. Name the "Straits". Name two bays. Name two coves.

Codfish cove.

Name an island inside the Duckburg Bay, or the sound in which Dukburg Harbor is located.

A typo makes this one even more difficult. :D

Where is Pumpkinburg?

Where was Dizzydrop Hill?

In such questions, do you mean "North? East? ..." ?
Pumpkinburg is upriver from Duckburg (they race to there on the frozen river), so it cannot be West.

What real estate did Cousin Gus own? Cousin Cuthbirt Coot?

I believe Cuthbert Coot is the one who owns a dude ranch; in an early ten-pager ("The Limber W Guest Ranch"?), Donald visits him with the nephews to show them how good a cowboy he is-- and ends up practicing on their hobby horse at the end (which gives me an idea for another Theme Quiz: books in Barks' stories).

What school did Huey, Dewey and Louie attend?

13th 1/3 precinct school?
(I am sure it's "13" and there is an odd fraction.)

"Donald's Big Imagination"-- Donald and the nephews test Gyro's "imagination" machine; instead of dreaming up monsters on distant planets, Donald changes the scale of everything.
Before leaving for another planet, he chases the Indians away with a snow storm.
I love this story.

Correct! WDC 199. This story is an example of virtual reality. As nowadays happens with computer games.
Is this an example of science fiction becoming reality? Can old-timer Robb tell how this story was seen by readers living in 1957, half a century ago? Nowadays the story looks almost realistic, as if it could happen tomorrow.

This is from "Sagmore Springs Hotel" (WDC&S 206, Nov 1957). At the beginning, the only job lower than Donald's is trash trampler-- quite a hilarious idea for a job.

Let's see you find this one...

"To get mad, or not get mad-- that is the question!", followed by "It is no longer a question!"

We were in the era of Science-Fiction as a big fad in 1957. That story was wonderful and funny. But it was partly disappointing in that Donald's images of what might be on other planets (stars) was only ordinary Earth objects and living beings, in a larger size. But, nevertheless, it was an ingenius idea for a story, with Gyro's machine, and the power of the mind taking one to other parts of The Universe.

So you reacted like the nephews? "Awww, no monsters"
Interesting, and I understand. It was quite an original move on Barks' part-- might we even say it was daring or bold? There is a lot to be discussed in here which would warrant a new thread, I think-- science fiction, imagination, monsters, proportions, ...
