De Kerstmis is verboden geweest:
Wikipedia schreef:[After the Scottish Reformation] the celebration of the Roman Catholic mass was outlawed.

TheReformation.info schreef:dire penalties for hearing the Mass

bron: http://www.thereformation.info/catholic_church.htm

The 1640 Act schreef:"... the kirke within this kingdome is now purged of all superstitious observatione of dayes... thairfor the saidis estatis have dischairged and simply dischairges the foirsaid Yule vacance and all observation thairof in tymecomeing, and rescindis and annullis all acts, statutis and warrandis and ordinances whatsoevir granted at any tyme heirtofoir for keiping of the said Yule vacance, with all custome of observatione thairof, and findis and declaires the samene to be extinct, voyd and of no force nor effect in tymecomeing."

Margo Todd schreef:In 1618, when Royal Order restored the right to celebrate Christmas to Perth’s Kirk, the ministers expected this to be in the form of a nativity sermon. Instead the population returned to their ‘profane’ pastimes en mass, taking two days off from their labour and beating the bellman who went through the town ringing the bell and telling them to return to work.

bron: http://womenshistorynetwork.org/blog/?p=542

Hogmanay: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hogmanay

Wikipedia:
Post-war period [20ste eeuw]

Christmas in Scotland was traditionally observed very quietly, because the Church of Scotland – a Presbyterian church – for various reasons never placed much emphasis on the Christmas festival.

Christmas Day only became a public holiday in 1958, and Boxing Day in 1974.[9] The New Year's Eve festivity, Hogmanay, was by far the largest celebration in Scotland. The gift-giving, public holidays and feasting associated with mid-winter were traditionally held between the 11th of December and 6 January. However, since the 1980s, the fading of the Church's influence and the increased influences from the rest of the UK and elsewhere, Christmas and its related festivities are now nearly on a par with Hogmanay and "Ne'erday". The capital city of Edinburgh now has a traditional German Christmas market from late November until Christmas Eve.

(snik)

Wikipedia, elders:
Puritan era

The first documented Christmas controversy was Christian-led, and began during the English Interregnum, when England was ruled by a Puritan Parliament. Puritans sought to remove elements they viewed as pagan (because they were not biblical in origin) from Christianity (see Pre-Christianity above). In 1647, the Puritan-led English Parliament banned the celebration of Christmas, replacing it with a day of fasting and considering it "a popish festival with no biblical justification", and a time of wasteful and immoral behavior. Protests followed as pro-Christmas rioting broke out in several cities and for weeks Canterbury was controlled by the rioters, who decorated doorways with holly and shouted royalist slogans. The book The Vindication of Christmas (London, 1652) argued against the Puritans, and makes note of Old English Christmas traditions, dinner, roast apples on the fire, card playing, dances with "plow-boys" and "maidservants", and carol singing. The Restoration of King Charles II in 1660 ended the ban, but many clergymen still disapproved of Christmas celebration. In Scotland, the Presbyterian Church of Scotland also discouraged observance of Christmas. James VI commanded its celebration in 1618, but attendance at church was scant.

bron: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_controversy

"In Scotland, the Presbyterian Church of Scotland also discouraged observance of Christmas. James VI commanded its celebration in 1618, but attendance at church was scant."

The Scottish Reformation was Scotland's formal break with the Papacy in 1560, and the events surrounding this. It was part of the wider European Protestant Reformation; and in Scotland's case culminated ecclesiastically in the re-establishment of the church along Reformed lines, and politically in the triumph of English influence over that of the Kingdom of France.

The Reformation Parliament of 1560, which repudiated the pope's authority, forbade the celebration of the Mass and approved a Confession of Faith, was made possible by a revolution against French hegemony. Prior to that, Scotland was under the regime of the regent Mary of Guise, who had governed in the name of her absent daughter Mary, Queen of Scots (then also Queen (consort) of France).

The Scottish Reformation decisively shaped the Church of Scotland[1] and, through it, all other Presbyterian churches worldwide.

bron: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottish_Reformation

Andere site:
After the Church Reformation in the 16th century, the celebration of Christmas was frowned on by the Kirk, which regarded it as a "Popish festival".
Mass was banned in Scotland at that time and "Christmas" or "Christ's Mass" was included in that.
There are records of charges being brought against people for keeping "Yule" as it was called in Scotland.
Amazingly, this dour, joy-crushing attitude lasted for 400 years. Until the 1960s, Christmas Day was a normal working day for most people in Scotland.

bron: http://www.rampantscotland.com/know/blknow11.htm

In 1583 the Presbyterian Church suppressed the observation of Christmas in Scotland because there are no biblical references to Christmas celebrations nor any biblical commandments to celebrate the birthday of Christ. The Church of Scotland continued to discourage the celebration of Christmas, which remained a normal working day in Scotland until 1958. Hogmanay (December 31) was the main day of Scottish celebration.

bron: http://www.benbest.com/history/xmas.html

"The Church of Scotland continued to discourage the celebration of Christmas, which remained a normal working day in Scotland until 1958."

Vervolgens zegt Wikipedia "Christmas Day only became a public holiday in 1958".

-Act [discharging] the Yule vacance (2 June 1640)—abolished the Yule Vacance (Christmas recess).
-The first Act was partly repealed in 1686.
-Act [discharging] the Yule vacance (15 April 1690)—abolished the Yule Vacance (Christmas recess).
-The second Act was partly repealed in 1712, by The Vacance Act of the Westminster parliament.
-Christmas Day only became a public holiday in 1958, and Boxing Day in 1974.

Niet helemaal duidelijk dus.

http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=D+2012-028

In plaatje 4.3 (blz.

During the nineteenth century, gingerbread was both modernized and romanticized. When the Grimm brothers collected volumes of German fairy tales they found one about Hansel and Gretel, two children who, abandoned in the woods by destitute parents, discovered a house made of bread, cake and candies. By the end of the century the composer Englebert Humperdink wrote an opera about the boy and the girl and the gingerbread house.

At Christmas, gingerbread makes its most impressive appearance. The German practice of making lebkuchen houses never caught on in Britain in the same way as it did in North America, and it is here still that the most extraordinary creations are found. Elaborate Victorian houses, heavy with candies and sugar icicles, vie in competition with the Hansel and Gretel houses, more richly decorated and ornamented than most children could imagine in their wildest dreams.

Gingerbread making in North America has its origins in the traditions of the many settlers from all parts of Northern Europe who brought with them family recipes and customs. By the nineteenth century, America had been baking gingerbread for decades.

In plaatje 5.1 (blz.

bron: http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joelbok

The function of the Yule goat has differed throughout the ages. In a Scandinavian tradition similar to wassailing, held at either Christmas or Epiphany, young men in costumes would walk between houses singing songs, acting out plays and playing pranks. This tradition is known from the 17th century and continued in places into the early 20th century. The group of Christmas characters would often include the Yule goat, a rowdy and sometimes scary creature demanding gifts.

Other traditions are possibly related to the sheaf of corn called the Yule goat. In Sweden, people thought of the Yule goat as an invisible spirit that would appear some time before Christmas to make sure that the Yule preparations were done right. Objects made out of straw or roughly-hewn wood could also be called the Yule goat, and in older Scandinavian society a popular Christmas prank was to place this Yule goat in a neighbour's house without them noticing; the family successfully pranked had to get rid of it in the same way.

Soihdut sammuu, kaikki väki nukkuu, väki nukkuu.
Öitten varjoon talon touhu hukkuu, touhu hukkuu.

Tonttujoukko silloin varpahillaan, varpahillaan

In plaatje 1.5 (blz.

In plaatje 5.6 (blz.

In plaatje 1.2 (blz. 42) noemt Donald een Jamaicaanse plumpudding.
In plaatje 4.1 (blz. 45) is deze pudding te zien.

Many Jamaicans are familiar with the Christmas cake, others with the plum pudding. What is the history of these two items and are they different? My research led me to information that show some slight differences based on their origins. [...]
The plum pudding evolved from a method of preserving food in the 14th century called 'mince meat/pies' where large amounts of meat were preserved at the end of autumn by combining it with dried fruits and other ingredients and then placing it into a pastry case. This was then served during the festive season.
Another Roman dish called pottage, which is a meat and vegetable stew slowly cooked with fruits and spices, impacted what became the plum pudding. Many of us remember the nursery rhyme, 'Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold ... in the pot nine days old', this is a similar dish but made with split peas and lentils. Over time, other ingredients such as bread crumbs and reddish brown colouring were added to the pottage, with less meat and more fruits. [...]
The Christmas cake came after the plum pudding and is also tied to the celebrations of the many days of Christmas. It is said that it was baked with a pea inside and the person who received this would receive good luck. The traditions of the plum pudding and Christmas cake travelled with people from Europe to the New World. [...]
We in Jamaica have added our twist to this tradition. I can remember taking turn with many family members to stir the Christmas cake mixture. Those were the days of wooden spoons. The reward was getting a chance to lick the spoon and bowl. There are a wide variety of family recipes that abound. Some people prefer their cake moist while others prefer it crumbly. There is even another group of people who like their Christmas cake rich and dark with fruits, rum and browning versus the lighter-shade version.

In plaatjes 4.1-4.3 (blz.

In plaatje 6.7 (blz. 47) noemt Donald het traditionele Geheime Kerstman-spel.

Secret Santa is a Western Christmas tradition in which members of a group or community are randomly assigned a person to whom they anonymously give a gift. Often practiced in workplaces or amongst large families, participation in it is usually voluntary. It offers a way for many people to give and receive a gift at low cost, since the alternative gift tradition is for each person to buy gifts for every other person. In this way, the Secret Santa tradition also encourages gift exchange groups whose members are not close enough to participate in the alternative tradition of giving presents to everyone else.

bron: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secret_Santa

bron: http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lootjes_trekken

Wikipedia zegt daar niets over.

There are various traditions and ways in which a "Secret Santa" is run. In some variations, as Christmas approaches, names of participants are placed in a hat, and participants draw the name of a person for whom to buy a gift. Along with name submission, each participant may also submit a short wish-list of items from which the gift-giver can choose. There is often a strict limit to how much can be spent on the present. Presents are then exchanged anonymously. Many schools and offices do this at Christmas time, often as a cost-saving effort. It usually takes place prior to Christmas because the office and school settings require it. Sometimes people leave hints in cards on desks, others create other special ways to make themselves known.

Often, the gift-getting is practiced with all the presents being placed on a table, marked with the name of the receiver but not the giver. Sometimes the gift-giver will personally give the recipient the present, thereby revealing their identity. Some groups may choose to donate the money they saved on presents to charity.

bron: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secret_Santa

A Christmas tree is a decorated tree, usually an evergreen conifer such as spruce, pine or fir, traditionally associated with the celebration of Christmas. An artificial Christmas tree is an object made to resemble such a tree, usually made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

The tree was traditionally decorated with edibles such as apples, nuts or other foods. In the 18th century, it began to be illuminated by candles, which with electrification could also be replaced by Christmas lights. Today, there are a wide variety of traditional ornaments, such as garland, tinsel, and candy canes. An angel or star may be placed at the top of the tree to represent the angel Gabriel or the Star of Bethlehem from the Nativity.

The custom of the Christmas tree developed in early modern Germany with predecessors that can be traced to the 16th and possibly the 15th century, in which "devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes". Christmas trees are hung in St. George's Church, Sélestat since 1521. It acquired popularity beyond Germany during the second half of the 19th century. The Christmas tree has also been known as the "Yule-tree", especially in discussions of its folkloristic origins.

bron: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_tree

King Tut never saw a Christmas tree, but he would have understood the tradition which traces back long before the first Christmas, says David Robson, Extension Educator, Horticulture with the Springfield Extension Center.
The Egyptians were part of a long line of cultures that treasured and worshipped evergreens. When the winter solstice arrive, they brought green date palm leaves into their homes to symbolize life's triumph over death.
The Romans celebrated the winter solstice with a fest called Saturnalia in honor of Saturnus, the god of agriculture. They decorated their houses with greens and lights and exchanged gifts. They gave coins for prosperity, pastries for happiness, and lamps to light one's journey through life.
Centuries ago in Great Britain, woods priests called Druids used evergreens during mysterious winter solstice rituals. The Druids used holly and mistletoe as symbols of eternal life, and place evergreen branches over doors to keep away evil spirits.
Late in the Middle Ages, Germans and Scandinavians placed evergreen trees inside their homes or just outside their doors to show their hope in the forthcoming spring. Our modern Christmas tree evolved from these early traditions.
Legend has it that Martin Luther began the tradition of decorating trees to celebrate Christmas. One crisp Christmas Eve, about the year 1500, he was walking through snow-covered woods and was struck by the beauty of a group of small evergreens. Their branches, dusted with snow, shimmered in the moonlight. When he got home, he set up a little fir tree indoors so he could share this story with his children. He decorated it with candles, which he lighted in honor of Christ's birth.

In plaatje 7.1 (blz.

Where do They Dance Around the Christmas Tree?
Answer:
It is a tradition to dance around the Christmas tree in Scandinavian countries, which include Sweden, Iceland, Norway, Denmark, and Finland.

Well, the Danish have a tradition of dancing around the Christmas tree; as a matter of fact it is a Scandinavian practice, which includes Sweden, Finland, Iceland, and Norway.

Over 'Donald Duck - Een magisch mooi kerstfeest - deel 2':

Ui schreef:[Tonttujen jouluyö - tip tap] In plaatje 1.1 (blz. 16) zingt Donald volgens hemzelf een Fins kerstliedje. [...]
This is a Finnish translation of the Swedish original text [...]

Tipp tapp, tipp tapp, tippe, tippe tipp tapp, tipp, tipp, tapp.

Se, då krypa tomtar upp ur vrårna, upp ur vrårna,
lyssna, speja, trippa fram på tårna.
Tipp tapp, tipp tapp, tippe, tippe tipp tapp, tipp, tipp, tapp.

Snälla folket låtit maten rara, maten rara
stå på bordet åt en tomteskara, tomteskara.
Tipp tapp, tipp tapp, tippe, tippe tipp tapp, tipp, tipp, tapp.

Hur de mysa, hoppa upp bland faten, upp bland faten,
tissla, tassla: "God är julematen, julematen!"
Tipp tapp, tipp tapp, tippe, tippe tipp tapp, tipp, tipp, tapp.

Tipp tapp, tipp tapp, tippe, tippe tipp tapp, tipp, tipp, tapp.

Nu till lekar! Glada skrattet klingar, skrattet klingar,
runt om granen skaran muntert svingar, muntert svingar.
Tipp tapp, tipp tapp, tippe, tippe tipp tapp, tipp, tipp, tapp.

Natten lider. Snart de tomtar snälla, tomtar snälla
kvickt och näpet allt i ordning ställa, ordning ställa.
Tipp tapp, tipp tapp, tippe, tippe tipp tapp, tipp, tipp, tapp.

Sedan åter in i tysta vrårna, tysta vrårna,
tomteskaran tassar nätt på tårna, nätt på tårna.
Tipp tapp, tipp tapp, tippe, tippe tipp tapp, tipp, tipp, tapp.

Nogmaals over 'Donald Duck - Een magisch mooi kerstfeest - deel 2':

Donald Duck - Een magisch mooi kerstfeest - deel 2
Deens product, Italiaans tekenwerk. (Byron Erickson, Andrea Ferraris en onbekend)
http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=D+2012-032

bron: http://finlandsite.nl/finlandsite/finland/inhoud/page.php?109

bron: http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kerstgebruiken_wereldwijd

bron: http://batsfjord.skynetblogs.be/

avellanes i mató,

si no cagues bé
et
daré un cop de bastó.

caga tió!"

shit, log,
shit nougats,

hazelnuts and mató cheese,

if you don't shit well,

I'll hit you with a stick,

shit, log!

Ui schreef:Donald Duck - Een magisch mooi kerstfeest
Deens product, Italiaans tekenwerk.

Donald maakt Jamaicaanse plumpudding

Wikipedia schreef:Helleborus niger is commonly called the Christmas rose, due to an old legend that it sprouted in the snow from the tears of a young girl who had no gift to give the Christ child in Bethlehem. [citation needed]

bron: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helleborus_niger

http://books.google.nl/books?id=pvwRAAA ... &q=madelon

Wikipedia schreef:The plant's association with Christmas began in 16th century Mexico, where legend tells of a girl who was too poor to provide a gift for the celebration of Jesus' birthday. The tale goes that the child was inspired by an angel to gather weeds from the roadside and place them in front of the church altar. Crimson "blossoms" sprouted from the weeds and became beautiful poinsettias. From the 17th century, Franciscan friars in Mexico included the plants in their Christmas celebrations. The star-shaped leaf pattern is said to symbolize the Star of Bethlehem, and the red color represents the blood sacrifice through the crucifixion of Jesus.
Poinsettias are popular Christmas decorations in homes, churches, offices, and elsewhere across North America. They are available in large numbers from grocery, drug, and hardware stores. In the United States, December 12 is National Poinsettia Day.

bron: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euphorbia_ ... sociations

Wikipedia schreef:Poinsett, an avid amateur botanist, sent samples of the plant home to the States and by 1836 the plant was most widely known as the "poinsettia."

bron: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joel_Rober ... _to_Mexico

Leuk, leuk, leuk!

Fijne Kerst, iedereen!
